Dark Winter Streets & Personal Safety
This winter we’ve noticed a marked increase in people buying torches for personal safety. Many of these customers have told us that it’s due to their local council turning off or dimming street lighting in a bid to save funds.
This year 75% of all councils in the UK are switching off or dimming street lights.
While many people agree that councils need to save money, many feared that it would lead to more crime and injury; a fear that is sadly growing in evidence.
This year the AA stated in no uncertain terms that turning off street lighting was indeed the cause for some pedestrian deaths as inquests ruled that, “the drivers stood little or no chance of avoiding the collision”
The evidence against blacked-out roads is clear and unfortunately growing every year as highlighted in this AA report.
The impact on crime is less clear cut but many people including shift workers, now feel less safe walking home on the dark streets for fear of personal attack or hazardous roads.
For years, accepted safety advice when walking alone in the dark was to ‘stick to well lit areas’ so it’s not surprising that people are feeling a lot more unsafe now: http://www.suzylamplugh.org
This is something we’ve been hearing a lot this year from our customers wanting themselves and loved ones to feel safer.
Until councils can adopt more cost effective LED lighting then it is up to the individual to prepare themselves in these dark times. Rural residents have rarely been used to street lighting and are more accustomed to carrying torches.
We all need to go back to the ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ campaigns of our school days; reflective clothing and illumination is key. LED technology is now so advanced that a high-powered torch can be carried on a keychain or in a pocket. Some torches don’t even need to be carried and can be attached to clothing, bags, hats etc to illuminate your way!
A good LED torch will ensure that you can illuminate your way and at the same time be seen. We have an extensive range of torches for various budgets. But if you need help choosing, please contact us and we will find the best torch for your application and budget. Either email firstname.lastname@example.org or call us on 01274 512919
